Moving, selecting and hiding multiple icons on the desktop

Moving icons from one location to another on the desktop usually requires selecting of the icons first especially when you want to move multiple icons at the same time.

Selecting an icon or icons means to highlight the icon or icons and it is than in two ways.

  1. Press and hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse pointer over the icons you want to select.
  2. Press and hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and click on the icons you want to select one after the other using the mouse.After selecting the icons, you can release the Ctrl key.

To move an icon from one location to another, put the mouse pointer on the icon, click and hold down the left mouse button. Drag the icon to the new location or where you want it to be then release the button.

How to move multiple icons at a time.

  1. Select all the icons you want to move to the new location by holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse pointer over the icons you want to move. Release the button after selecting the icons.
  2. Press and hold down the left mouse button on one of the selected icons and move them to the new location and release the button.

How to hide icons on the desktop

  1. Right-click on a blank space (where there are no icons) on the desktop.
  2. Put the mouse pointer on View on the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on Show desktop icons on the drop-down menu.

To bring back the icons on the desktop, use the same procedure above.

Creating, naming and renaming a folder

What is a folder?

A folder is an electronic container on the computer that can contain files and other folders.

How to create and name a folder on the desktop

To create a folder on the desktop, follow the steps below;

  1. Right-click on an empty space(where there are no icons) on the desktop.
  2. Put the mouse pointer on New on the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on Folder on the drop-down menu.
  4. Type the name you want to give to the folder.
  5. Press the enter key on the keyboard to end the process.

NB: If you did not type any name for the folder and you press the enter key, it would be given the name New Folder by the computer.

How to rename a folder

To rename a folder means to change the name of the folder. For example, if there is a folder on the desktop with the name “Alpha” and it is changed to “Omega” means the folder has been renamed. The procedure below is used to rename a folder;

  1. Right-click on the folder you want to rename.
  2. Click on Rename on the pop-up menu.
  3. Type the new name you want to give to the folder.
  4. Press the enter key on the keyboard to end the process.
