Demonstrate the use of the desktop background as well as working with folders

The colourful desktop background is called wallpaper. It can be a picture or colour. It can be changed to the picture or colour you like.

How to change the desktop background or the wallpaper (Windows 10)

  1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Click on Personalize from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on the picture you want to use under Choose your picture.
  4. Close the settings window.

Changing the wallpaper to your own picture on the computer

You can take a picture of pupils with your phone, transfer to the computer or lead them to create a picture with the paint application and guide them through the procedure below to use it as the wallpaper.

  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Click on Personalize from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on Browse under Choose your picture.
  4. Open the folder in which your picture is located.
  5. Click on the picture.
  6. Click on Choose picture.
  7. Close the settings window.

How to change the wallpaper to a colour

  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Click on Personalize from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on the rectangular shape with the down-pointing arrow under Background.
  4. Click on Solid color.
  5. Click on the colour you want under Background colors.
  6. Close the settings window.

How to change the theme colour

Theme colour is the colour that shows on the taskbar and the start menu. It can be set automatically by the computer or you can set it yourself. To set the theme colour, use the steps below;

  1. Right-click on an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Click on Personalize on the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on Colors on the left side of the personalization window.
  4. There is a toggle button under Automatically pick an accent color from my background. If it is on, turn it off for the colors to appear.
  5. Click on the colour you want and close the personalization window.

How to change the theme

The theme is what determines the look of the desktop and also how programs or applications look like when you open them. To change the theme, follow the steps below;

  1. Right-click on an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Click on Personalize on the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on Themes on the left side of the personalization window.
  4. Click on Theme settings.
  5. Click on the theme you want and close the personalization window.

Recycle Bin or Trash Can

The recycle bin or trash can is where deleted items are kept. When an item is deleted on the computer, it goes into the recycle bin and can be restored back to where it was deleted or it can be deleted permanently. If an item is deleted permanently, it means you cannot get it again. To restore a deleted item also means that you would bring it back from the recycle bin to where you deleted it from.

How to delete an item

To delete an item or send it to the recycle bin, follow the steps below;

  1. Right click on the item.
  2. Click on delete on the pop-up menu.

How to restore a deleted item

To bring back the item you have deleted, use the steps below;

  1. Double-click on the Recycle Bin to open it. You can also right click on it and then click on Open from the pop-up menu.
  2. Right-click on the item you want to restore or bring back.
  3. Click on Restore and close the Recycle Bin.

How to delete an item permanently from the Recycle Bin

Deleting an item permanently from the computer means you don’t want it again on the computer so take precautions before deleting an item.

  1. Open the recycle bin.
  2. Right-click on the item you want to delete permanently.
  3. Click on Delete.
  4. There would be a pop-up box that would ask you whether you are sure you want to delete the item permanently, click on Yes.

How to delete all items in the recycle bin permanently at once

These steps will delete everything in the recycle bin permanently.

  1. Right-click on the recycle bin icon on the desktop.
  2. Click on Empty Recycle Bin.
  3. There would be a pop-up box that would ask you whether you are sure you want to delete the items permanently, click on Yes.

Explore the use of copy and paste with the pop-up menu on the desktop

To copy and paste a folder on the desktop means to put an identical version of the folder in a different location(s). The keyboard can also be used to copy and paste a folder but in this case, we are going to use the mouse only to copy and paste a folder on the desktop. Before we copy and paste a folder on the desktop, let us create one.

How to create a folder on the desktop

  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Put the mouse pointer on New on the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on folder on the drop-down menu.
  4. Type a name for the folder (e.g. Group one).
  5. Click anywhere on the desktop.

Now that we have created our folder, let us copy and paste it on the desktop using the pop-up menu through the procedure below;

  1. Right-click on the folder (The one we created).
  2. Click on Copy on the pop-up menu.
  3. Right-click on a blank space on the desktop.
  4. Click on Paste on the pop-up menu.

(If pupils are in groups, lead them to create folders according to their group names and then guide them to copy and paste on the desktop.)

Illustrate the use of the File Explorer window

What is File Explorer?

It is an application on the computer used to manage files or documents.

If you want to open file explorer, just open any folder because folders are opened with file explorer. The hard drives and other removable storage icons can be located in the file explorer. The Navigation Pane on the left side of the File Explorer window can be used to find all items on the computer.  To locate hard drives and other removable storage icons, go through the steps below;

  1. Open any folder on the desktop.
  2. Move the mouse pointer to This PC on the Navigation Pane and click on it.
  3. After clicking on This PC, the icons of the hard drives and other removable storage devices would be displayed.

The Home ribbon of the File Explorer

Usually the home ribbon opens automatically when you open File Explorer, meaning you don’t need to click on the Home tab again.

It has Clipboard, Organize and Open categories. It also has New and Select. Some of the items in those categories are Pin to Quick access, Copy, Paste, Properties, etc.

How to copy and paste using the Home ribbon

(Assuming File Explorer is already opened)

  1. Select the item you want to copy.
  2. Open the folder in which you want to paste the copied item using the navigation pane.
  3. Click on the Paste icon from the ribbon.

How to move an item from one location to another

  1. Select the item you want to move
  2. Click on the Move to icon
  3. Select the folder into which you want to move the item.

How to make an item appear under quick access in the navigation pane.

  1. Select the item you want to pin.
  2. Click on Pin to Quick access from the ribbon.

How to create a new folder using the Home ribbon

  1. Select the location where you want to create the new folder from the navigation pane.
  2. Click on New icon from the ribbon.
  3. Click on New folder.
  4. Type the name of the folder.
  5. Press the enter key on the keyboard.

How to delete an item

  1. Select the item you want to delete.
  2. Click on the delete icon from the ribbon.

How to rename an item

  1. Select the item you want to rename.
  2. Click on the rename icon from the ribbon.
  3. Type the new name.
  4. Press the enter key on the keyboard.

How to select all items in a folder

  1. Open the folder.
  2. Click on Select from the ribbon.
  3. Click on Select all from the drop-down menu.

How to open a new file explorer window using the File menu

  1. Click on the File tab.
  2. Put the mouse pointer on Open new window.
  3. Move the mouse pointer to the next Open new window and click on it.

How to close File explorer using the File menu

  1. Click on the File tab.
  2. Click on Close.

How to access frequently used locations/folders

  1. Click on the File tab.
  2. On the right side under Frequent places, all the locations or folders that are been opened many times would be displayed. Locate the one you want to open and click on it.
