Definitions Of 25 Basic Internet Terms

The internet is full of terms and are being used day in day out because of how popular the internet is. Let me list a few basic ones with their definitions.

Internet – it is the interconnection of networks worldwide.

Web – it is the means through which networks communicate world wide with the aid of hypertext transfer protocols (HTTPs).

Website – it is the collection of webpages.

Webpages – these are the pages that are put together to form a website. These are just like the pages of a book but online, whiles the pages of a book are labelled 1,2,3,4 and so on webpages have names. Examples, Contact us,blog page,home etc.

Homepage – this is the first page a web browser presents to you when you open a website. It is sometimes referred to as index page.

Web browser – it is an application software that enable the computer of smartphone user to surf the internet or to open webpages. Examples, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome,Opera etc.

Online – this means your computer, tablet or smartphone is connected to the internet.

Social media – these are the various platforms that enables internet users to communicate through text messages, voice notes, image messages and video calls. The most popular ones are Facebook,Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube.

Offline – this means your device is not connected to the internet.

URL – it is the address format of a website. Its full form is Uniform Resource Locator.

Modem – it is a device that connects a computer to the internet.

Network – it is the interconnection of computers.

ISP – it refers to the company that gives you access to the internet. Its full form is Internet Service Provider.

Cybercrime – a crime that happens on the internet.

Wi-Fi – it is a technology that connects devices to the internet wirelessly.

Reload – to refresh a particular webpage. Or to reopen the webpage.

EDGE, H+, 3G, 4G – they are all internet connection standards for mobile phones.

Wireless Connection – it means two or more devices are connected with no wires or cables.

Navigate – to move from one webpage to another.

Menu – links to other webpages.

Blog – it is more or less a website but usually owned by an individual to communicate with a certain group of audience. The difference between a blog and a website is that, a website can contain a blog but a blog cannot contain a website.

Username – a name which is used to identify you online on a particular website.

Password – it is a group of characters chosen by an individual to gain access and to lock an account or device.

Domain name – the name of a website.

Browsing – moving through webpages. Sometimes, surfing is used instead of browsing.
