There are many a times when computer users would like to upgrade their computer’s memory (RAM) usually to increase it’s performance, speed-wise. Before the memory is upgraded, you have to determine the number of memory slots on your computer’s motherboard as to whether you are to add another memory stick or to replace the currently used one(s) in case your memory slot is only one or two.
How to check the number of memory slots using the Windows Task Manager.
The simplest way to find out the number of memory slots on the motherboard is to use the Windows Task Manager. Follow the procedure below to check the availability of memory slots;
1. Use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+Esc to directly open the Windows Task Manager. If you are on windows 10, you can also right-click on a blank space on the taskbar and then click on the Task Manager option from the pop-up menu. In fact there are many ways to access the Windows Task Manager.
If the Task Manager opens like the one in the image below, click on More details.
2. Click on the Performance tab.
3. Click on Memory on your left-hand-side of the window.
4. In the right-bottom corner, your memory’s information would be displayed including the total number of slots and the one(s) used. You will see the label: Slots used, if it is “2 of 2” meaning there are two memory slots and all are in use, if it is “1 of 4”, it means four memory slots and only one is in use and so on.
From the image above, arrow 3 shows that the computer has two memory slots and both are in use. In case I want to upgrade the memory of this computer, I have to swap one or the two memories for a high capacity one(s) because there are no empty slots.
