How to create, save and open an existing document.

Microsoft Word(MS Word) is a word processing software that is used to create documents. Any file which is created using a word processor is also referred to as document.

There are two ways of creating a document in Microsoft Word. The document could be created on a blank template or a pre-designed template. A blank template has nothing on it so you are to create and position all items where you want them but a predesigned template already has a suggested layout, meaning it shows you where to place your image, heading and all other items your document will contain.

Let’s now look at the procedure. We will be using Microsoft Word 2013.

The procedure in creating a document .

Mostly, when you open word 2013 it looks like the image below.

If it looks like that(image above), just go ahead and click on the blank document option and continue with the creation of your document. But if you want to use a predesigned template, locate the template and select it then continue with your document creation. Predesigned template may contain words and images you do not need, just delete them and insert your own.

But if you open word and it looks like the image below…………

…. just go ahead and start typing.

If you want to use a predesigned template (with the same interface above), follow the steps below;

Select the File tab.

Select New from the backstage view.

Below the Blank document option are the predesigned templates from which you can choose your choice.
When you find your choice, select it.

If you are ok with the selected template, then continue and insert your texts and images.

Saving your document

After we have successfully created our document, let us now look at how to save it. There are two ways to save a document which are almost the same. That is, using the Save command or Save As command. But we will be using the Save As command.

Steps in saving a document

Select the save icon from the Quick Access Toolbar.

Select where(location) to save the document(e.g Documents).

The Save As dialogue box will appear.

Enter a File name for your document(e.g my document).

Click Save and your document would be saved.

Steps in opening an existing document

A document you have already created could be opened by locating and double clicking it. But let’s say you have already opened MS Word and you want to open a document you have already saved. Follow the steps below;

Click the File tab.

From the Backstage view, Click Open.

Select Computer( or This PC).

Select Browse.

A dialogue box will appear, locate and select your document.

Click Open.
