The most common computer cables.

Computer cables are the cables that connect one part of the computer to the other. There are many different kinds of these cables but the most common ones that any computer user may come across on one way or the other are the ones listed below.

Video Graphics Array (VGA) cable

This cable is used to connect the monitor/TV to the system unit. It sends video signals from the system unit to the monitor/TV.

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) cable

This is also a cable that connects the monitor to the system unit just like the VGA but the difference is that, VGA carries analog signals while DVI can carry both digital and analog signals. DVI cables are of three types which are; DVI-A, DVI-I and DVI-D. DVI-A carries only analog signals, DVI-I carries both analog and digital signals and DVI-D carries only digital signals.

DVI to VGA cable

This cable has one DVI end and one VGA end. The DVI end is connected to the system unit and the VGA end is connected to the monitor.

Personal System/2 (PS/2) cable

It is used to connect a computer mouse or keyboard to the system unit.

Power cable

It is used to connect the computer to a power source. Usually a desktop computer uses two; one for the system unit and one for the monitor.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)

This cable is used to connect a computer monitor /TV to the system unit. It is able to transmit both pictures or images and sound as well which makes it a prime choice over VGA when connecting a monitor/TV to the system unit. This means your TV’s speaker would be utilized.

Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable

USB cable is used to connect many computer components to the system unit. Some examples of components that can be connected to the system unit using a USB cable are; computer mouse, computer keyboard, external optical drive, external hard drive, mobile phone, tablet, printer, modem, etc.
One end is connected to the component and the other end to the system unit.

Audio cable

It is used to connect devices that can play or input sound to the computer. Examples of such devices are speakers, microphones, headphones, etc.

Ethernet cable

It is used to connect a router and other network devices to the computer.

Display port

It is used to connect a computer monitor/TV to the computer just like HDMI. It also carries both images and sound but it’s of high quality compared to HDMI.
