What is the CPU?
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the component responsible for executing instructions and managing operations within a computer. It is located inside the system unit and works closely with memory and input/output devices.
Main Functions of the CPU
a. Processing Data
The CPU processes raw data into useful information. It performs calculations and follows instructions from software programs.
b. Controlling Other Components
The CPU controls how different parts of the computer work together, such as the keyboard, monitor, and printer. It ensures that each component gets the correct data at the right time.
c. Storing Temporary Data
The CPU uses internal memory called registers to hold temporary data while processing tasks. It also works closely with the computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory).
d. Fetching and Executing Instructions
The CPU follows a cycle called Fetch-Decode-Execute:
Fetch: Gets instructions from memory
Decode: Understands what the instruction means
Execute: Carries out the instruction

a. Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
Performs mathematical and logical operations.
b. Control Unit (CU)
Directs operations inside the computer by sending control signals.
c. Registers
Stores data and instructions temporarily during processing.
Importance of the CPU
Without the CPU, a computer cannot function. It processes everything from typing and browsing to gaming and printing.
